Buying Advice

How to check if a used car listing is a good buy (UK)

The advert looks good. You need to know whether this particular car deserves your money or a bid.

Start with the car and buying route

  • Auction: supply the supported lot URL and registration or VIN. Ralph reads the description and photographs where the page can be extracted.
  • Dealer or private: enter the registration or VIN, asking price and requested details. Marketplace links are not imported.
  • Off-market: use the registration or VIN and the evidence you have.

For a declared visible fault on a dealer or private car, you can optionally upload a clear photo of that fault.

Compare identity, MOT results and dated mileages with the listing. You can also use the official MOT history and GOV.UK buying checks.

A mileage conflict is a reason to pause, not proof of clocking. Repeated advisories need context. If the available evidence cannot resolve a material concern, you can leave the car before spending more.

Free MOT information does not establish that finance, stolen or write-off markers are absent.

Choose the next check for the gap

Pathway What you get
Custom The named evidence selected, with an itemised credit quote
Auction Bid Report, 15 credits Auction listing assessment, repair and cost plan, valuation and bid guidance
Premium, 25 credits The relevant wider assessment and licensed vehicle-history checks

Custom evidence does not automatically become a complete buy-or-avoid assessment. Auction Lot Analysis alone does not produce a maximum bid. Previous Advert History is separate for auction buyers.

Ralph’s finance, stolen and write-off checks use Data provided by Experian. Read the displayed product coverage and terms. Credits do not expire; the total is shown before running.

Decide what the evidence supports

Continue when the evidence and price justify the next step. Resolve a condition first when an important claim remains unanswered. Leave when the history, condition or costs are unacceptable to you.

For an auction, include fees, transport, repairs and reserve before setting a ceiling. Bidding above that ceiling is a reason to stop. See the Copart calculation.

A workable number still does not settle an unexplained history conflict. Before payment, match documents and inspect the car where access allows.
