## Match the car before discussing payment

Use [GOV.UK’s buying checks](https://www.gov.uk/checks-when-buying-a-used-car) alongside the report:

1. **Check the V5C and vehicle identity.** Compare the registration, VIN and relevant document details with the actual car. A number plate alone is not enough.
2. **View in daylight.** Look for panel gaps, corrosion, leaks, tyre wear and condition that differs from the listing.
3. **Check a cold start and warning lights** where the seller or venue allows it.
4. **Test drive where permitted.** Auction access may be limited; do not assume you will get a road test.
5. **Arrange an independent inspection** when you cannot judge an important concern yourself.

Records and photographs do not establish hidden mechanical condition. A recent MOT pass is not a full inspection or a service invoice.

## Resolve these conflicts before paying

| Concern | What needs to happen |
| --- | --- |
| VIN or documents do not match | Establish the correct identity; stop until resolved. |
| Mileage differs from the record | Check dates, units and supporting evidence. |
| Promised repair has no evidence | Inspect the relevant component and assess the actual scope. |
| Condition is worse than described | Recalculate costs or leave. |
| Pressure to pay before checking | Finish the checks before committing. |

“Proceed only if” means resolve the named condition. A guess or reassurance alone does not supply the missing evidence.

## You can still leave after a positive report

The report reflects the evidence available when it was generated. A positive outcome or workable maximum bid does not override new facts at the viewing.

If the identity, condition, costs or seller’s account no longer fit, walk. Money already spent on a check is not a reason to buy the car.

At auction, make this decision using the access available **before bidding**. Read the sale terms; do not assume you can unwind a purchase later. [Compare the buying pathways](/guides/auction-vs-dealer-vs-private-used-car-decision-uk).

## Revisit the plan when the evidence changes

For an auction lot, new damage changes the repair allowance and bid ceiling. For a dealer or private car, it can change the price you are willing to pay. [Use the full used-car checklist](/guides/what-to-check-when-buying-a-used-car).
